Ingredients

Scale
  • ¾ cup warm whole milk
  • 2¼ tsp instant yeast
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup black cocoa powder
  • 5 tbsp unsalted butter (softened)
  • ½ cup dark brown sugar
  • ¼ cup cream cheese
  • 1½ tbsp ground cinnamon
  • ½1 tsp black food coloring (optional)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 12 tbsp milk for consistency

Instructions

  1. Warm milk to about 100–110°F and combine with instant yeast in a bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together sugar, egg, softened butter, and optional black food coloring. Add the frothy yeast mixture.
  3. In a large bowl, combine flour, black cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually add dry ingredients into the wet mixture until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about an hour).
  6. Prepare filling by mixing softened butter with dark brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and black cocoa powder.
  7. Roll out risen dough into a rectangle and spread filling evenly across it. Roll tightly into a log and slice into pieces.
  8. Place slices in a greased baking dish and let rise again for about 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat oven to 350°F and bake rolls for about 22 minutes until set but soft.
  10. Prepare icing by mixing cream cheese with butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and enough milk to achieve desired consistency.
  11. Drizzle icing over warm cinnamon rolls before serving.
