  • 3 lbs boneless beef shoulder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tsp molasses
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp Five Spice Powder
  • 1/2 tsp white pepper
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp honey

Instructions

  1. Cut beef shoulder into two long strips (3 inches thick).
  2. In a bowl, whisk together sugar, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, hoisin sauce, molasses, salt, Five Spice Powder, white pepper, sesame oil, and honey until smooth.
  3. Rub marinade generously over beef strips. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  4. Preheat oven/grill to 500°F.
  5. Place marinated beef on a baking rack lined with foil and bake uncovered for 25 minutes.
  6. Flip the beef and roast for an additional 10 minutes.
  7. Baste with reserved marinade and cook for another 10 minutes; flip again and baste before roasting for an extra 5 minutes.
  8. Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
