  • 1/2 tsp fine sea salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup (Grade A Dark recommended)
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (to brown)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 Tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1–2 Tbsp milk or cream (as needed for consistency)
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
  • flaky sea salt or chopped toasted pecans (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in maple syrup.
  4. Add egg and vanilla; mix until combined.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients until just combined; refrigerate dough for 1 hour.
  6. Scoop dough into balls and place on prepared sheets, spacing them apart.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are golden but centers are soft; cool slightly before transferring to racks.
  8. For icing: Brown butter in a saucepan; whisk in powdered sugar, maple syrup, and milk until smooth.
  9. Drizzle icing over cooled cookies and top with flaky sea salt or toasted pecans.
